Personal Care Assistant (PCA)

Reports to: Qualified Professional, client and/or Responsible Party, office and management personnel.

Purpose for position: A Personal Care Assistant will perform direct client cares and will assist clients with Activities of Daily Living to help maintain the highest level of performance and independence.

Principal Responsibilities: Direct Client Cares (include, but are not limited to)
  • Understand and comply with the client’s Care Plan
  • Assist with personal hygiene and grooming including: bathing, showering, hair shampooing, etc.
  • Skin care
  • Bowel and bladder cares
  • Range of motion exercises
  • Respiratory assistance
  • Lifting, turning, positioning and transferring up to 50 pounds of weight and use of mechanical lift when available
  • Medication assistance/reminders for pre-dosed medications
  • Assistance with dressing and undressing
  • Assistance with social skills as needed
  • Cleansing of medical equipment
  • Dietary activities (may include gastronomy feedings)
  • Monitor, observe and report changes in client’s health or behavior
  • Provide supervision and observation for client safety
  • Accompany client to medical appointments
  • Occasionally perform other functions deemed necessary by the supervisory team
Documentation & Reporting:
  • Accurately document cares provided in charting – use only black ink and write legibly
  • Accurately document days and times for cares provided on timecard
  • Report to office staff any accidents or injuries involving the client within 24 hours of the occurrence
  • Immediately report suspected incidents of client abuse or neglect to the office
  • Report any unsafe client behavior to the Qualified Professional or office staff
  • Verbal communications with the client, Responsible Party, and office staff must be conducted in a respectful and professional manner
  • Communicate scheduling needs and conflicts with appropriate party (office staff or client/Responsible Party)
  • Notify office if unable to work scheduled hours as soon as you become aware you will be unavailable (minimum 48 business hours in advance notice is required for all cases)
  • Submit vacation requests at least two weeks in advance
  • In the event of resignation from the company, a two week notice is requested
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift, turn, position and transfer up to 50 lbs
  • Must present a negative TB skin test or chest x-ray
Position Specifications:
  • Must have the ability to get to the client’s residence on time
  • FLSA definition: Non-Exempt. (This position is paid hourly)
Educational/Experience Qualifications:
  • At least 16 years of age
  • Successful completion of competency test
  • Participation in services and continuing educational programs as required by Federal and State regulations
  • Some experience as a PCA or Home Health Aide is preferred, but not required
  • Individual must be able to show compassion and empathy of persons who are chronically ill, or otherwise disabled, and demonstrate an understanding and maturity with respect to the responsibilities and expectations of the position.
